CARCINOIDS OF THE LUNG

Carcinoids of the lung are a very rare tumours, which are of low grade malignancy. These tumours represent less than 1% to 3% of all lung tumours but are the most frequent histologic type among the rare tumours of the lungs. Usually these tumours are located at the orifice of a lobar bronchus or at the main bronchus, while it is rarely located at the parenchyma or in the tracheal wall.
The unique, acceptable and effective treatment is surgical resection, which offers almost complete cure, whenever performed according to the oncology rules of surgery.
The most frequent manifestation of these tumours are the recurrent lobar infections, stridor and haemoptysis. Unfortunately in many cases these patients are treated as asthmatic patients (10% to 15% of all cases), for a long period, before the diagnosis is confirmed.
