TRACHEAL SURGERY
The trachea and the main bronchi may develop different kinds of tumours (malignant and benign). Also tracheal stenosis may be caused after a long period of tracheal intubation because of the need for mechanical ventilation.
Any tracheal stenosis that cannot be treated successfully by the implementation of conservative means may be evaluated for radical surgical treatment. Also tracheal resection may be performed as a treatment for primary malignant tumours of the trachea as well as for benign tumours. This may be achieved by performing a wide tracheal resection and end to end anastomosis in order to avoid the permanent tracheostomy or the insertion of stents such as T-tube or Dumon stents. This aim can be achieved without the use of synthetic prosthesis as a substitute of the trachea.
